Making the announcement on his social media handle, Gambhir tagged BJP President JP Nadda, Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Home Minister Amit Shah. He formally requested JP Nadda to release him from his political duties.

Gautam Gambhir, a member of the 2007 T20 and 2011 ODI World Cup squad requested BJP President JP Nadda on Saturday (Mar 2) to stay away from political duties in order to focus on his cricketing commitments. Gambhir successfully contested the East Delhi seat in the 2019 general elections with a winning margin of 6,95,109 votes having joined the party in March of that year.
Gautam Gambhir won the 2019 Lok Sabha elections from the East Delhi seat. After that victory, it seemed that Gambhir was going to play a long innings even on the political pitch. But within five years he became disillusioned with politics.
