No injuries but Hibernia oil spill posed threat of deadly blast and fire: regulator
The Canada-Newfoundland and Labrador Offshore Energy Regulator reported a major hydrocarbon spill from the Hibernia oil platform on May 12, with no injuries or crude oil reaching the ocean.
The spill was caused by a broken or damaged drain on a sludge pump's utility shaft, releasing about 1,600 litres of crude oil.
Hibernia personnel noticed unusual noises and the presence of gas, stopping the crude discharge by closing a manual valve.
Hibernia Management and Development Company is investigating the incident and has submitted a preliminary report to the regulator as requested.
