Vigil for Yves Sakila to Take Place in Derry

Gardaí have not released the postmortem results as they investigate whether excessive force was used after Sakila was held by security staff.

  • On Friday, May 15, 35-year-old Yves Sakila died after being restrained by security staff following an alleged shoplifting incident at Arnotts department store on Henry Street in Dublin. Gardaí found him unresponsive and pronounced him dead at Mater Hospital.
  • The Serious Crime Unit has appointed a senior officer to lead the investigation, with Gardaí recovering CCTV and social media footage of the incident. Investigators are appealing for witnesses present on Henry Street between 5pm and 5.25pm on May 15.
  • Sakila family solicitor John Gerard Cullen said the family received no preliminary pathology results, which should have been available within 24 hours of Saturday's report. Cullen described the apparent withholding of information as 'disquieting.'
  • More than 200 people rallied outside Leinster House on Thursday to protest Sakila's death, with the Black Coalition Ireland demanding a transparent investigation and legislation against excessive force in civilian detention.
  • The Irish Council for Civil Liberties stated footage shows 'a disproportionate and excessive use of force,' while the Irish Network Against Racism has called for a thorough inquiry into the circumstances of Sakila's death.
