Further man charged after violence at Nowak protest
Ryan Atkinson pleaded guilty to violent disorder, becoming the 22nd person charged following a protest where 13 officers and a police dog sustained injuries.
Ryan Atkinson, 36, of Highcliff Avenue, pleaded guilty to violent disorder at Southampton Magistrates on Friday, becoming the 22nd person charged following protests in Southampton.
The demonstration involving 1,000 people began outside Southampton Central Police Station on June 2, sparked by anger after police released footage showing the moments before Henry Nowak died.
District Judge Henry Gordon said Atkinson "picked up a large frying pan and launched it at police" during the disorder, which caused injuries to 13 officers, a police dog, and a member of the public.
Authorities reported the police response involved 100 officers from nine different areas at a cost of £443,000, while the clean-up operation cost the council £7,000.
Four more men are set to be sentenced at Southampton Crown on Friday, while Atkinson remains in custody until his sentencing at Southampton Crown Court on June 29.
