Freed Gaza Flotilla Activists Allege Israeli Abuse Including Rape
Organizers said 15 detainees reported sexual assault and several were hospitalized after Israeli forces stopped the aid flotilla.
On Friday, activists from several European countries arrived home after being deported from Israel, with organizers reporting abuse and sexual assault allegations sustained during their Gaza flotilla detention.
Israeli forces arrested 430 people on 50 ships on Tuesday to halt the Gaza-bound flotilla, triggering international outrage after Security Minister Itamar Ben-Gvir posted a video mocking detained activists.
Organizers reported at least 15 cases of sexual assault and more than 30 reports of broken bones, while Italian economist Luca Poggi told Reuters, "We were stripped, thrown to the ground, kicked."
Italian Foreign Minister Antonio Tajani said he is coordinating with EU counterparts "so that there may be a quick decision to impose sanctions" on Ben-Gvir over his conduct.
Israel's prison service denied the allegations, stating all detainees are held lawfully, while the Global Sumud Flotilla argued the abuse represents a "mere glimpse of the brutality" imposed daily on Palestinian hostages.
The abuse allegations are expected to increase pressure on Israeli authorities to explain how the detainees were treated, particularly after the video released by the Israeli Minister of National Security.
