‘Free-falling’: Horror flight from Australia injures 10

Cathay Pacific said six crew members and four passengers were injured, and eight were taken to hospital after the aircraft dropped suddenly during meal service.

  • On Sunday, a Cathay Pacific Airbus A350-900 flight from Brisbane to Hong Kong encountered severe turbulence, injuring 10 people as the aircraft landed at Hong Kong International Airport at 6:45 a.m.
  • The turbulence struck about two hours before landing during breakfast service, catching cabin crew in the aisles without warning. Cabin crew appeared to suffer the worst injuries as food carts flew through the cabin.
  • Eight people were transported to North Lantau Hospital in Tung Chung, while two others received medical treatment at the airport. Four doctors on board assisted injured passengers and crew during the flight.
  • Passenger Nicholas Stevenson described the experience as "free-falling from a drop tower," with food and personal items scattered throughout the cabin. Photos showed the aircraft later inspected near maintenance hangars in Hong Kong.
  • This incident occurs two years after a Singapore Airlines flight over Myanmar encountered extreme turbulence, plunging 178 feet in less than five seconds. Clear-air turbulence often occurs near jet streams, though the cause of this incident remains under investigation.
