Flight delays in US to grow worse, transportation secretary warns
More than 8,000 flights were delayed due to air traffic controller staffing shortages amid a 26-day government shutdown causing stress and missed paychecks, officials said.
- On Oct 28, Transportation Secretary Sean Duffy said thousands of air traffic controllers will get paychecks with no money and that `The controllers are wearing thin`.
- After the shutdown on Oct. 1, the federal government forced 13,000 air traffic controllers to work without pay while the FAA remains about 3,500 controllers short.
- According to FlightAware, more than 8,000 US flights were delayed by 11pm ET on Oct 26, up from about 5,300 on Oct 25, and the FAA reported staffing issues at 22 locations on Oct 25.
- At Newark Liberty International Airport, a ground delay lasted until 12:59 a.m., and Duffy warned, `My job is to keep the airspace safe. And so, if I don't feel like I have enough controllers or enough controllers that are focused, we will slow down traffic, we will stop traffic` he told Bartiromo.
- By Nov. 15, U.S. Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent said military paychecks may be missed, while Duffy said travelers should expect delays that could pressure lawmakers to act.
