Who Is Shashi Shekhar Vempati, the New CBFC Chairperson? From IIT to Former Prasar Bharti CEO
The former Prasar Bharati chief replaces Prasoon Joshi after a leadership reshuffle that also put Joshi in charge of Prasar Bharati.
On Wednesday, May 6, 2026, the Government of India appointed former Prasar Bharati CEO Shashi Shekhar Vempati as the new Chairperson of the Central Board of Film Certification , succeeding noted lyricist Prasoon Joshi.
Joshi stepped down from the CBFC role following his elevation as Chairman of Prasar Bharati, with Vempati's appointment set for a three-year term from the date he assumes charge.
Vempati brings extensive media experience, having led Prasar Bharati from 2017 to 2022 while steering modernization efforts at Doordarshan and All India Radio , and concurrently managing Rajya Sabha TV from 2017 to 2019.
Beyond broadcasting, Vempati co-founded AI4India Org to democratize artificial intelligence access and worked at Infosys for 16 years; he also authored a book exploring the Prime Minister's public communication impact.
The Ministry of Information and Broadcasting stated Vempati's appointment aims to further strengthen the CBFC's functioning as he guides the board's certification process for films across India.
