Lebanese pop star turned militant appears in court after 12 years on the run
Fadel Shaker faces new military-related charges after turning himself in following 12 years on the run, with a preliminary court questioning held last Tuesday.
- This month Fadel Shaker surrendered after 12 years on the run, appearing in a Beirut, Lebanon court Tuesday for a preliminary questioning session.
- Following bloody 2013 street battles, authorities later tried him in absentia and sentenced him to 22 years in prison in 2020 after he hid in Ein el-Hilweh, Palestinian refugee camp.
- During the 2013 shootout that killed at least 18 soldiers he appeared in a YouTube video taunting the Lebanese army, saying `we have two rotting corpses that we snatched from you yesterday,`.
- Under the terms of a deal negotiated this month, earlier sentences dropped will be dropped and he will be questioned to prepare for trial on new charges of committing crimes against the military.
- Once a regional pop star after a 2002 smash hit, Fadel Shaker periodically returned to music in recent years, including a July viral song with his son Mohammed that got over 113 million views.
