Government Drafts Ex-M&S Chief Marc Bolland to Boost Youth Jobs
Marc Bolland will help ministers and employers expand 300,000 placements as officials warn youth joblessness has passed 1 million.
The Government appointed former Marks & Spencer chief executive Marc Bolland as lead non-executive director at the Department for Work and Pensions on Saturday to convene business leaders and tackle youth unemployment.
Alan Milburn's review, released Thursday, warned of a 'lost generation' as NEET numbers surpassed 1 million and described the crisis as a 'whole-system failure' costing Britain £125bn annually.
Bolland will advise Work and Pensions Secretary Pat McFadden on delivering a 'youth guarantee' for 18- to 21-year-olds while leveraging Movement to Work experience to secure 300,000 training placements over three years.
Work and Pensions Secretary McFadden said Bolland's track record makes him 'uniquely placed' to bring employers together, while the department will explore further support for young people with health conditions.
Data shows 84% of NEET young people want employment, though six in 10 have never held a job; without intervention, NEET numbers could rise to 1.25 million by 2031.
