- On Feb 1, the Xiamen Intermediate People's Court sentenced Tang Yijun, former justice minister, to life imprisonment for accepting over 137 million yuan in bribes, CCTV reported.
- Court records show Tang Yijun illegally accepted property worth more than 137 million yuan between 2006 and 2022 and abused his position to secure benefits in company listings, land buybacks, bank loans and case handling.
- The court found his actions met the legal standard for bribery, ruling the sums were `particularly huge` and caused `particularly serious losses` to the interests of the state and the people.
- The sentence included lifelong deprivation of political rights and confiscation of all personal property, and he was expelled from the Communist Party after the probe.
- The sentence comes as Chinese President Xi Jinping presses ahead with a sweeping anti-corruption campaign, with probes into Wang Xiangxi, Minister of Emergency Management, and General Zhang Youxia in recent weeks.
