South African Police Investigate Killing of Foreign National by Crowd
Police say about 50 people assaulted a foreign national during a Durban march, and investigators are following leads to identify suspects.
On Thursday, October 22, 2026, KwaZulu-Natal police opened a murder case after a foreign national was fatally assaulted by a group of about 50 people during a protest march in Durban.
Durban, South Africa's third biggest city, has become a hotspot for anti-immigrant tensions that surged this year amid a population of 62 million and around 2.4 million foreign nationals.
During a march on Pixley Street, two individuals broke away from the group to assault the victim, according to KwaZulu-Natal police spokesperson Col Robert Netshiunda, who confirmed the man was declared dead at the scene.
The South African Police Service is actively following several leads to identify suspects, while authorities also investigate separate recent violence and looting in Johannesburg's Soweto township earlier this month.
South African President Cyril Ramaphosa has denounced migration-related violence while acknowledging border control failures, as tens of thousands of migrants have fled the country following recent attacks.
