Ford's enormous F-150 becomes unlikely part of Japan's efforts to woo Trump
- On Tuesday, President Donald Trump met Prime Minister Sanae Takaichi at Tokyo's Akasaka Palace, signing two agreements while a Ford F-150 pickup truck greeted him outside.
- Earlier this year, the U.S.-Japan trade deal cut tariffs to 15% from 25%, but Jim Farley, Ford CEO, said it gives Japanese automakers a `meaningful` cost advantage.
- Ford Motor Company announced it will increase F-150 and F-Series Super Duty production by more than 50,000 trucks in 2026 to offset losses from a supplier aluminum plant fire.
- Last week Reuters reported Sanae Takaichi finalized a purchase package including soybeans, gas and a fleet of Ford F-150s, but purchase numbers remain uncertain.
- Separately, Ford pulled out of Japan almost a decade ago, while a third of new cars sold last year were mini kei cars, and foreign brands made up 6% of sales.
