Ontario government sold private jet back to Bombardier, Ford says
Bombardier repurchased the used Challenger 650 after backlash over the province’s $28.9 million purchase for government travel and emergencies.
Ontario Premier Doug Ford announced the province sold its 2016 Bombardier Challenger 650 back to Bombardier for $28.9 million, the exact amount originally paid.
Ford previously defended the purchase as an "investment in Ontario," claiming it was "much cheaper" to own the aircraft than chartering flights for government travel across the province, Canada, and the United States.
Ontario NDP Leader Marit Stiles criticized the acquisition amid the province's affordability crisis, arguing Ford only reversed course due to "buyer's remorse" following public backlash.
On Monday in Ottawa, Ford stated he listened to Ontarians who felt now was not the right time for such expenses, despite the lack of charter flights in northern jurisdictions.
Comparatively, the province noted that Quebec spent $107 million on its fleet, while the federal government paid $753 million for six new Global 6500 jets.
