Ford, autoworkers’ union to meet today to kick off contract talks
Unifor seeks a three-year deal that raises pay, pensions and job security as talks with Ford set the template for GM and Stellantis.
- On Monday, Unifor National President Lana Payne and Ford of Canada human resources vice-president Meredith Keenan opened contract negotiations in Toronto, with the union representing nearly 19,000 autoworkers setting a July 10 deadline for a three-year agreement.
- Unifor selected Ford as the pattern-setting company, citing a "respectful working relationship," to establish a standard for subsequent talks with General Motors and Stellantis amid sector instability.
- Negotiations occur amid 25 per cent U.S. tariffs on non-U.S. vehicles and uncertainty surrounding the Canada-United States-Mexico Agreement review, while the sector has lost nearly 6,500 jobs since February 2025.
- Payne stated the union seeks a three-year contract offering job security, future product commitments, and wage increases, emphasizing Canada cannot "become a market for vehicles only made somewhere else."
- Ford has committed $464.5 million to retool its Oakville assembly plant for Super Duty production, though Payne noted it would have been "too risky" to delay bargaining until after the CUSMA review settled.
