Florida officer took possession of man’s home after finding him dead 4 years ago, police say
Authorities say Brian Sguros used a dead man’s identity, paid taxes and utilities, and filed permit paperwork while claiming more than $214,000 in repairs.
- On Tuesday, 35-year-old Lauderhill Police Department officer Brian Louis Sguros was arrested and charged with official misconduct and criminal use of deceased personal identification for allegedly taking possession of a dead resident's home.
- Responding to a welfare check on July 11, 2022, at 4551 Northwest 12th Street, Sguros discovered 71-year-old Dennis Ionis West dead inside the residence from natural causes.
- Investigators said Sguros "paid the taxes and utilities at the home in West's name" and "forged West's signature on the permit" to obtain city approval for repairs while falsely claiming to be West's friend.
- Held at the Broward County Main Jail without bail, Sguros faces charges including criminal use of deceased personal identification and offense against computer users; the Lauderhill Police Department placed him on administrative leave without pay.
- Legal heirs discovered the deception through probate proceedings, prompting police to encourage property owners to register with the Broward County Property Appraiser's free Owner Alert service to monitor unauthorized documents.
