Flooding from Chantal’s remnants forces dozens to flee homes in North Carolina
ALAMANCE COUNTY, NORTH CAROLINA, JUL 7 – Alamance County officials declared emergency after nearly 6,000 power outages and multiple water rescues from flooding caused by Tropical Storm Chantal's heavy rains.
- On Monday, rising waters linked to the aftermath of Tropical Storm Chantal forced dozens of North Carolina residents to evacuate their homes and resulted in at least one fatal accident.
- Heavy rainfall and flooding occurred as Chantal struck close to Litchfield Beach in South Carolina on Sunday before weakening and advancing northeastward at a speed of 9 mph.
- Authorities issued a state of emergency in Alamance County, closed about 120 roads statewide, and conducted numerous water rescues as rivers crested at near-record levels.
- The Eno River crested at 25.63 feet, surpassing its previous record of 23.6 feet, while the Haw River reached 32.5 feet, the second highest ever recorded at the Town of Haw River.
- The flooding highlights ongoing risks of flash flooding and hazardous conditions in the region as the storm system continues weakening but moving northeast through mid-Atlantic states.
