Kenya aviation workers end strike that disrupted flights, officials say
Union leaders said flights should resume after the deal, which covers agency fees, collective bargaining talks and a non-victimisation clause.
On Tuesday, September 1, 2026, the Kenya Aviation Workers Union ended its strike after signing a return-to-work agreement with state agencies and ministry officials.
The industrial action commenced on August 30, disrupting travel across major hubs including Jomo Kenyatta International Airport , as workers demanded improved welfare and better working conditions.
Transport Cabinet Secretary Davis Chirchir and Labour Cabinet Secretary Alfred Mutua brokered the agreement, which includes Kenya Airports Authority remitting union agency fees and initiating Collective Bargaining Agreement talks.
KAWU head Moss Ndiema told a press conference, "We are simply calling off our strike action and pleading with our members to begin the process of normalising operations, restoring services."
Remaining grievances from a July 20 strike notice will undergo arbitration led by the Principal Secretary for Aviation and Aerospace Development, while parties await court determination on the Jambojet Recognition Dispute.
