Five EU Countries Push For Deal With UK On Electricity
Five European leaders, including Germany, Belgium, the Netherlands, Luxembourg, and Denmark, urged Brussels on Saturday to accelerate UK integration into the European electricity market ahead of a November summit.
Prime Minister Andy Burnham will meet European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen and European Council leader Antonio Costa on November 20 in Brussels, 10 years after the Brexit referendum.
Proponents argue integrating the UK would transform the North Sea into "the largest clean energy hub in the world," though the European Union expects an "appropriate level of financial contribution" and an "entry fee" for access.
Former Brexit negotiator Michael Barnier warned the Prime Minister he cannot rejoin the single market "à la carte," stating "There will be no possibility to have one freedom and not the other."
The summit agenda covers youth mobility, sanitary regulations for food products, and carbon emission quotas, while the UK resists EU demands to scrap deportation rules for European offenders.
