First search to get under way for Disappeared victim Seamus Maguire
On Tuesday, the first search begins for Seamus Maguire, one of the Disappeared, at Derryclone near Lurgan in Co Armagh over approximately two acres of farmland close to the family home.
Maguire, 29, was murdered and secretly buried by republican paramilitaries in 1976 and has lain undiscovered for over 50 years; information from the Police Service of Northern Ireland in 2022 led to his addition to the Disappeared list.
The Maguire family described Seamus as 'our much-loved eldest brother' and said their late mother looked for him until the day she died, hoping to recover his body for burial in St Patrick's graveyard in Aghagallon with parents May and Patrick.
Lead investigator Henry declined to set a specific timeframe, saying teams will remain until they find remains or are satisfied Maguire is not there, while cautioning that the search's start does not mean the commission has all necessary information.
Maguire is one of four whose remains are still being searched for by ICLVR—Columba McVeigh, Joe Lynskey and Robert Nairac—marking the first search for the Disappeared in Northern Ireland since Peter Wilson's recovery in 2010.
