INDIA, JUL 15 – The astronauts completed a nearly three-week mission funded by India, Poland, and Hungary, marking the first spaceflights from these countries in over 40 years, officials said.
- After undocking Monday, the SpaceX capsule splashed down off the Southern California coast on July 15, 2025, concluding a 20-day Axiom Mission 4.
- Axiom’s fourth mission to the ISS since 2022 formed part of NASA’s effort to open low Earth orbit to private operators, with India, Poland and Hungary each paying over $65 million and marking their first astronaut launches in over 40 years.
- Led by Commander Peggy Whitson, the crew conducted dozens of experiments in orbit and even sampled the first pierogies in space.
- After splashdown, Commander Peggy Whitson said `Thanks for the great ride & Happy to be back` and Tibor Kapu added `We will spread the word in our countries that these things are within our reach. These things are possible even for smaller countries like ours`.
- With NASA expecting to retire the ISS around 2030, private stations like Axiom’s are in the works, and Shubhanshu Shukla’s flight is viewed as a precursor to India’s 2027 Gaganyaan mission.
