First group of Gazans arrive in Ireland to study
The Irish government and universities coordinated a complex operation to bring 52 Palestinian students from Gaza, offering scholarships and ensuring safe travel amid a humanitarian crisis.
- On Thursday, some 26 young people from Gaza arrived in Ireland to begin third-level education, landing at Dublin airport as Minister for Foreign Affairs Simon Harris welcomed their arrival.
- In a complex, sensitive operation Irish officials secured exit and transit permissions from Israeli authorities and Jordan, with students receiving green light messages on Tuesday.
- They travelled via Amman, Jordan and Istanbul, Turkey on three commercial flights and will undergo medical support and screening on arrival.
- The Department of Foreign Affairs and Trade has supported more than 200 people to leave Gaza and travel to Ireland, while about 514,000 people face famine in Gaza City and surrounding areas in the coming weeks.
- College students in Dublin protested earlier this month demanding evacuations, while Asem Al Jerjawi, Gaza-based journalist and incoming student, described severe hunger and said he has lost 20 kilos.
