Firefighters from 30 states battle wildfires in Colorado
More than 1,800 personnel from over 30 states are battling seven blazes, including two major fires that remain only partly contained.
Seven fires have burned through over 200,000 acres of Colorado terrain, with over 1,800 personnel deployed from more than 30 states to fight the blazes according to InciWeb data.
Wildfires frequently impact Western states due to arid climates, flammable vegetation, and frequent lightning storms. California saw over 8,300 wildfires burn over 1 million acres in 2024 alone.
The Aspen Acres Fire in Pueblo has burned over 99,000 acres with 36% containment, while The Ferris Fire in Dolores County reached 43% containment within the San Juan National Forest after burning nearly 65,000 acres.
Camille Stevens-Rumann of Colorado State University called the Aspen Acres Fire truly "tragic," arguing that prescribed burns remain the "best preemptive task" to mitigate future extreme wildfires despite inherent risks.
A November 2021 Colorado Public Radio report revealed Colorado ranks lowest among Western states in identifying wildfire causes, determining only 43% of large fires, though investigators found humans remain at fault for nearly nine of every 10 wildfires.
