Firefighters battle Fontainebleau forest fire near Paris as two arrested
Nearly 850 firefighters battled the blaze as authorities said 187 water drops were carried out and investigators probed possible arson.
On Monday, July 13, France battled two fires that scorched over 1,300ha in the Fontainebleau Forest south of Paris, forcing around 1,000 people to evacuate.
France is currently experiencing its third heatwave in less than three months, and investigators found about 10 fire ignition points within a 1,000-metre perimeter suggesting deliberate ignition.
Rescue commander Jean-Marc Sicard directed 187 water drops using Canadair aircraft, Dash planes, and helicopters, while residents like Cindy Fuyard, a 45-year-old nurse, provided water from swimming pools.
Interior Minister Laurent Nunez announced 59 arrests across France for "deliberate or accidental arson," including two connected to the Fontainebleau fire, while President Emmanuel Macron called it "an exceptionally large wildfire."
Meteo-France weather services warned that high temperatures will persist through the July 14 Bastille Day holiday as wildfires have already scorched 25,000ha across France since the start of the year.
