Fire Prevention Week focuses on batteries

The Franklin Fire Department highlights safe buying, charging, and recycling practices to reduce home fire risks from lithium-ion batteries during Fire Prevention Week.

  • During Fire Prevention Week, October 5 to 11, 2025, Franklin Mayor Ken Moore proclaimed the event and the Franklin Fire Department urged residents to prioritize lithium-ion battery safety.
  • Because lithium-ion cells power so many devices, including smartphones, tablets, power and lawn tools, they can overheat or enter thermal runaway if damaged or misused.
  • Buy quality products by checking for UL, ETL, or CSA certification marks, use manufacturer-approved chargers on hard surfaces and unplug fully charged devices, and recycle batteries at Franklin Sanitation & Environmental Services, Lowe's, Home Depot, Staples, or call2recycle.org.
  • Local outreach aims to translate guidance into action, with free smoke-alarm installation programs credited for saving over 500 lives and working smoke alarms cutting risk by more than 60%. Franklin will offer events and materials throughout October at www.franklintn.gov/FirePreventionWeek.
  • Most battery fires occur while charging, so fire officials advise residents and families to follow daytime charging guidance, monitor devices, and unplug chargers when finished to address firefighting challenges from overheated batteries.
