Fire in industrial building closes Montreal’s Jacques Cartier Bridge

A four-alarm fire in a vacant 1910 heritage building forced closure of the Jacques Cartier Bridge; about 120 firefighters battled the blaze overnight, officials said.

  • On Jan. 21, 2026, Jacques Cartier and Champlain Bridges Incorporated said the Jacques-Cartier Bridge, its traffic lanes, multipurpose path and sidewalk closed in both directions around 6 a.m. due to a nearby fire.
  • The fire started on the first floor of a vacant industrial building at De Lorimier Avenue and Logan Street, and Montreal Fire Department described it as a multi-alarm blaze engulfing the heritage building.
  • Some 120 firefighters and over 100 firefighting crew battled the blaze, using the bridge deck as a firefighting platform while flames from the roof indicated internal collapse.
  • Motorists were advised to detour via the Samuel De Champlain Bridge or the Victoria Bridge as the closure disrupted traffic between Montreal and the South Shore ahead of Wednesday morning's rush hour due to heavy smoke and collapse risk.
  • Héritage Montréal notes the building, first occupied by Joseph Barsalou and later owned by Procter & Gamble and Familex, shaped the bridge's curve; there are no reported injuries and cause is unknown.
