Around 150 People Evacuated After Vehicle Fire in Pennsylvania Turnpike Tunnel
Emergency dispatchers said one person was flown to a Pittsburgh hospital after a fire forced a closure and detours on the Pennsylvania Turnpike.
On Thursday night, a fire inside the Allegheny Tunnel forced closure of the Pennsylvania Turnpike between Breezewood Interchange and New Stanton Interchange .
Approximately 150 people from nearly 80 vehicles were evacuated from the tunnel and transported by bus to a maintenance facility by Bollman Charter Service during the emergency response.
Emergency dispatchers reported one person was flown to a Pittsburgh hospital, though their condition remained unknown as traffic is now routed through the eastbound tunnel.
Motorists returned to their vehicles around 2:45 a.m. Friday, with traffic clearing shortly after 3 a.m. as the Commission thanked emergency crews and customers for their patience.
The westbound side of the Allegheny Tunnel remains closed for inspection while the Commission urges drivers to slow down and follow traffic patterns through the single tunnel.
