Fire at a shoe factory kills 28 in one of China’s deadliest blazes in recent years
The blaze spread quickly through flammable shoe materials, trapping workers on the roof and prompting a large rescue response, officials said.
A devastating fire tore through the Huiteng footwear factory in the southeastern Chinese city of Jinjiang on Thursday, leaving at least 28 people dead in one of the country's deadliest industrial blazes in recent years.
Preliminary findings indicate that the fire broke out around noon on the ground floor of the multi-story building, where highly flammable raw manufacturing materials and adhesives caused the flames to spread rapidly and emit a thick, pungent smoke.
Emergency services deployed 183 responders and 35 vehicles to the scene, successfully evacuating over 200 people, though dramatic footage captured the chaotic moments where several terrified workers were left trapped on the building's rooftop.
Following the tragedy, Chinese President Xi Jinping ordered an all-out search and rescue effort, while state authorities quickly froze the company's financial accounts and took the factory owner into custody to face strict accountability investigations.
