Files relating to India’s largest nuclear power plant Kudankulam exposed in data breach

Reuters reviewed nearly 19,000 leaked files, and investigators said the documents could expose plant layouts, suppliers and security weaknesses.

  • On July 15, ransomware group World Leaks posted a cache of files related to India's Kudankulam Nuclear Power Plant, including blueprints for infrastructure at Units 3 and 4.
  • Reliance Infrastructure, a contractor for the plant, confirmed a "partial breach" on a server hosted by third-party provider Yotta, stating it has informed the Indian government.
  • The 19,000 leaked files purportedly include blueprints for ventilation and cooling systems and a "common control room", though they do not appear to relate to core nuclear reactors supplied by Russia's Rosatom.
  • Nickolas Roth, senior director at the Nuclear Threat Initiative, warned the breach could pose a "serious" risk to plant safety, while the Indian Computer Emergency Response Team investigates.
  • Kudankulam is the largest of India's seven nuclear plants and central to Prime Minister Narendra Modi's expansion plans, marking the second cyber incident linked to the facility since 2019.
