FIFA World Cup, youth job gains gave the labour market a lift in June
Employers in Canada added 18,000 jobs in June, mainly in part-time and private sector roles, reducing the unemployment rate to 6.5 per cent.
Youth aged 15 to 24 gained 33,000 jobs in June, supported by World Cup-related hospitality hiring, though unemployment rates varied within this group.
Manufacturing lost 17,000 jobs in June, contributing to a total decline of 61,000 jobs since January 2025 due to ongoing U.S. tariffs.
Economists view the labor market as stabilizing after earlier losses, with overall employment up 99,000 year-over-year and expectations that the Bank of Canada will hold interest rates steady.
