Call for Fifa Probe on Malvinas Banner After England World Cup Defeat to Argentina

Downing Street said FIFA should review whether the banner breached rules banning political messages in football.

  • On Wednesday, July 15, Argentina defeated England 2-1 in the World Cup semi-final in Atlanta, after which players held a banner reading "Las Malvinas son Argentinas," claiming sovereignty over the British-controlled Falkland Islands.
  • FIFA regulations prohibit "banners, flags, flyers, apparel and other paraphernalia that are of a political, offensive, and/or discriminatory nature." The Argentine Football Association faced a £20,000 fine in 2014 for displaying an identical banner.
  • Business Secretary Peter Kyle told the BBC the banner was "an egregious violation of the rules of not having political activity as part of the football." Prime Minister Keir Starmer endorsed the call for a FIFA investigation.
  • Vice-President Victoria Villarruel defended the display, posting that the match "wasn't just another match," while midfielder Leandro Paredes said the islands remain "a sad part of our history" that motivated the team.
  • Ahead of Sunday's final against Spain, Prime Minister Keir Starmer wished both teams well, "especially Spain," adding political tension to the showpiece match between Argentina and the European champions.
