Federal panel approves Trump’s arch, clearing way for construction
The 8-4 vote follows more than 8 hours of public testimony, and officials say construction could start immediately.
On Thursday, the National Capital Planning Commission approved President Donald Trump's planned 250-foot-tall triumphal arch for Memorial Circle. The project received final approval following more than eight hours of public testimony and heated debate.
Designed to resemble the Arc de Triomphe in Paris, the structure will stand more than 80 feet taller. President Trump described the arch as a military asset capable of housing drones and snipers.
The monument will be nearly as tall as the 288-foot Capitol. Above-ground construction could start in May 2027, with the total project expected to take 33 to 39 months to complete.
Virginia and the District of Columbia sued the federal government on Saturday, calling the project "legally indefensible." Representative Don Beyer warned the arch will snarl traffic and impact the nearby Ronald Reagan Washington National Airport.
Legal challenges could still block construction, as a judge considers lawsuits against the project. While the Justice Department stated initial excavation could begin this week, the future of the arch remains uncertain.
