Trump administration held secret talks with Iran on deporting Iranians during the war, court documents show
Court filings say U.S. immigration officials coordinated with Iranian counterparts to arrange removals for more than 100 people and sought third-country deportations.
Recently unsealed court documents reveal President Donald Trump's administration held secret talks with Iran to deport Iranians via an unnamed third country, even as the war continued. A judge ordered 24-hour notice before finalizing any deportation plans.
An ongoing lawsuit alleges the Department of Homeland Security shared confidential asylum records with Iranian officials, violating regulations. Hundreds of emails confirm the countries coordinated to arrange for more than 100 Iranians to be flown back on three immigration flights between late 2025 and 2026.
Judge Ana Reyes questioned the logic of returning individuals to a country Trump has described as "lawless" and an enemy that murdered protesters. She demanded written notice five days prior to any removals to ensure judicial oversight.
Justice Department attorney Dimitar Georgiev-Remmel defended the actions in court, asserting the government is "executing lawful orders of removal." The administration maintains it is following legal processes despite ongoing diplomatic hostility.
To circumvent diplomatic hurdles, the administration has deported individuals to third countries like the Central African Republic. During Trump's second term, it has also relocated two dozen migrants to El Salvador, Costa Rica, and Panama.
