Alabama asks US Supreme Court to allow pro-Republican congressional map
The panel said the map diluted Black voting power and ordered Alabama to use a court-approved plan with two majority or near-majority Black districts.
Alabama has asked the US Supreme Court to allow the use of a Republican-favored congressional map despite a court ruling that it discriminates against Black voters.
A three-judge panel found the 2023 GOP-drawn map intentionally diluted Black voting power and required two districts with majority or near-majority Black populations, which was blocked and replaced by a court-approved map for the 2024 elections.
After a Supreme Court ruling weakening the Voting Rights Act, Alabama sought to implement the 2023 map, but the lower court upheld its finding of intentional racial discrimination and maintained the use of the court-ordered map.
The legal dispute follows the Supreme Court's guidance that intentional discrimination requires strong evidence and involves a request for a ruling by June 1 to allow the use of the Republican map ahead of upcoming primaries.
