Federal agents drive off with 1-year-old girl after arresting her father in Los Angeles
A U.S. citizen was arrested for assault during an immigration raid and agents took his car with his 1-year-old daughter inside, sparking concerns about child safety, advocates said.
- On Tuesday, November 4, U.S. Border Patrol agents arrested a U.S. citizen at a Home Depot in Cypress Park around 9:12 a.m. and drove off in his car with his one-year-old daughter inside.
- Amid agents staging at Dodger Stadium, an agency spokesperson for the Department of Homeland Security said the man was arrested for investigation of assault after allegedly wielding a hammer and throwing rocks at U.S. Border Patrol agents during a raid in the Home Depot in Cypress Park involving roughly 20 to 50 agents.
- Video footage reviewed by L.A. TACO shows agents handcuffing the man, a toddler in a front-facing car seat on the car's center backseat, and masked agents using pepper spray during the roughly 30-minute raid with unmarked vehicles.
- At 4:40 p.m. rapid responders confirmed the toddler was reunited with her mother, while more than 24 hours later the detained man's whereabouts remained unknown and five immigrants were arrested on suspicion of immigration violations.
- In reaction, the Los Angeles Rapid Response Network said armed federal agents' presence on voting day was meant to 'suppress our right to vote' and Lindsay Toczylowski said 'It was a dangerous act to have armed men get in a car with that child and remove her from the situation.
