The FDA has upgraded an egg recall to a Class I designation, its highest health-risk level, due to potential Salmonella contamination. The recall is linked to 98 illnesses and 26 hospitalizations.

A Class I recall indicates “a situation in which there is a reasonable probability that the use of or exposure to a violative product will cause serious adverse health consequences or death," according to the FDA.
U.S. health authorities removed more than 1.5 million dozens of eggs, equivalent to about 19 million pieces, from the market due to possible contamination with Salmonella Enteritidis.
