Families of Syrians who disappeared during its civil war say the search must go on

- The Syrian conflict, which began with the 2011 Arab Spring uprisings against dictators and led to a civil war, resulted in the detention of numerous Syrians by Bashar Assad's intelligence agencies, opposition fighters, and the extremist Islamic State group.
- The United Nations estimated over 130,000 Syrians had disappeared by 2021, while The Syrian Campaign reports that approximately 112,000 are still missing.
- Wafa Mustafa, who held a placard of her father Ali, detained in 2013 by Assad's forces and from whom she hasn't heard since, fled to Germany fearing detention herself, and has returned twice since Assad's ouster in April by rebels led by Hayat Tahrir al-Sham.
- A United Nations-backed commission urged the interim government led by Ahmad Al-Sharaa to preserve evidence, document findings from prisons, and pursue perpetrators related to the search for the disappeared, which also includes some foreign nationals like American journalist Austin Tice.
