FAAN gives update on fire incident at Lagos Airport

FAAN firefighting teams contained the fire at MMIA Terminal 1 with no fatalities; six people were injured and three international flights were diverted, officials said.

  • On Monday, the Federal Airports Authority of Nigeria announced a fire at Murtala Muhammed International Airport Terminal One, Lagos, and said airspace was suspended but has reopened with no loss of life.
  • FAAN's investigations indicate the fire started from the ground floor, with reports suggesting about 3pm in a first-floor server room, and flames escalated to the roof as police and rescue helicopters supported rescue efforts.
  • Emergency teams evacuated fourteen people from the control tower, and Managing Director Mrs. Olubunmi Kuku said six injured people are stable while the departures hall suffered damage during its $500 million renovation.
  • The airport activated its Emergency Operations Centre and called for reinforcements from Lagos State Government, Julius Berger Nigeria Plc, CCECC, and LASEMA, relocating most departures to Terminal Two and preparing a temporary terminal for four airlines.
  • FAAN said investigations continue and the immediate priority was containing the fire while civil and structural engineers assess the building's integrity; on Saturday, FAAN clarified personal selfie videos are allowed but filming others or restricted areas is prohibited, resolving the matter with Nonstop Patrick .
