Denmark Claims Russia is Planning Sabotage Against Its Defense Industry
PET says Russian intelligence is recruiting ordinary Danes online for reconnaissance that could support sabotage against defence firms tied to Ukraine.
On Thursday, Denmark's national security service, PET, revealed that Russia is recruiting Danish citizens to help plan sabotage against domestic defense firms with ties to Ukraine.
"Russia is planning and carrying out acts of sabotage against defense companies," Emil Gresholm, head of PET counterintelligence, said, with Russian intelligence services actively preparing sabotage directed at the Danish defense industry.
Russian agencies used social media and gaming platforms to recruit Danes for tasks including photographing infrastructure and companies, which could facilitate future sabotage operations, Gresholm said.
Gresholm stressed that assisting Russian intelligence services is "extremely serious," whether citizens act deliberately or unwittingly, as the country faces heightened sabotage risks.
Amid broader European concerns regarding hybrid warfare, a recent drone incident at Leipzig and Halle Airport in Germany prompted calls for new sanctions, though Moscow has denied any involvement in sabotage.
Hostile acts attributed to Moscow are multiplying across Europe. On September 3, Copenhagen accused Moscow of preparing 'sabotage actions' against Denmark's defence industry. However, European countries remember over how to respond.
The Danish company PET stated that Russian intelligence agencies recruited citizens through social media and games platforms to prepare sabotages against defense companies.
