Experts says Ottawa’s new AI task force is skewed towards industry
The 27-member task force includes major companies and experts tasked with fast-tracking AI strategy updates amid concerns about industry dominance, says law professor Teresa Scassa.
- On Oct. 7, 2025, Ottawa launched a 27-member task force, which Teresa Scassa said is skewed towards industry voices, and gave it until the end of the month to report.
- Following a major federal investment last year, the government asked the task force to examine research, adoption, commercialization, investment, infrastructure, skills, and safety and security.
- The roster mixes industry and academia, naming firms like Cohere, CGI, Royal Bank of Canada, and three professors of computer science, but only three members focus on safe AI and public trust.
- The government is also running a public consultation on its AI strategy while a coalition representing the cultural sector told MPs on Monday it was disappointed by its lack of representation, and Teresa Scassa warned few members focus on social science or ethical risks.
- Experts also note Canada ranks second in AI research but 20th in adoption, while most AI capacity relies on U.S. platforms; Solomon warned digital sovereignty and AI investment bubble risks.
