- On Friday, Scott Kelley, former U.S. Postal Inspector, was indicted on 45 counts in Boston for allegedly stealing more than $330,000 from elderly victims; he pleaded not guilty and was released on a $25,000 bond in U.S. District Court.
- Between January 2019 and Aug. 11, 2023, prosecutors say Kelley emailed unwitting postal workers to reroute nearly 1,950 packages to him, which he then opened for cash, abusing his leadership in the Mail Fraud and Mail Theft Units.
- The indictment identifies seven victims, average age 75 and oldest 82, who mailed between $1,400 and $19,100 and never recovered cash; Kelley allegedly laundered funds via postal money orders and deposited over $130,000 into four bank accounts, spending $15,400 on escorts and $4,300 on Caribbean cruises.
- Prosecutors say the indictment includes 45 counts of wire fraud, mail fraud, mail theft, and money laundering, each carrying up to 20 years in prison plus additional sentences for theft and false tax returns.
