Ex-DUP leader Donaldson to be sentenced for child sex abuse including rape
Former Democratic Unionist Party leader Jeffrey Donaldson was sentenced to 15 years in prison today at Newry Crown Court for 18 sexual offenses against two women when they were children.
A jury convicted Donaldson in June of one count of rape, 13 indecent assaults, and four offenses of gross indecency; because the offenses pre-date the 2008 Criminal Justice Order, the Court applied the 1996 Order.
Describing the lasting impact, Complainant said: "My childhood was stolen from me and I will never get it back. The effects of the Donaldsons' actions have bled into every part of my life."
Responding to the sentence, the DUP stated: "He deserves every day of the lengthy prison sentence he has to serve following the guilty verdict for preying on innocent child victims."
Raising safety concerns, Acheson told BBC Radio Ulster's Talkback programme that Donaldson is "uniquely vulnerable," stating: "I don't think it's acceptable to keep him in conditions of solitary confinement.
