Even in retirement, the gap between the rich and the poor divides: every fifth person has to earn a maximum net of 1,400 euros per month. The richest 20 percent, on the other hand, are more than twice as much available.
The number of people who are dependent on basic protection in old age continues to increase, but the income disadvantage of women seems even more unfair.

Many retired people have little money. Although incomes have increased on average, more and more older people are dependent on state basic security.
One in five retired people (20%) aged 65 and over has a monthly net equivalent income of no more than €1,400. Another 20% have more than €1,400 but less than around €1,790 per month, according to the Federal Statistical Office (Destatis) based on the results of the 2024 Survey on Income and Living Conditions (EU-SILC).
