Nearly 100 people abducted or disappeared in Syria since January, says UN
The U.N. human rights office reports at least 97 abductions and enforced disappearances since January amid ongoing violence and threats in Syria.
- On Friday, the Office of the United Nations High Commissioner for Human Rights said nearly 100 people have been abducted or disappeared in Syria since the start of the year, with reports of ongoing enforced disappearances.
- Following the December 2024 overthrow of Bashar al-Assad by Islamist rebels, security outbreaks in coastal areas and Sweida have made tracing missing persons difficult, OHCHR reports.
- The case of Hamza Al-Amarin, a Syria Civil Defense volunteer, highlights ongoing disappearances as he went missing on July 16 during a humanitarian mission and remains unaccounted for, while families of missing persons in Syria face distress over unknown fates despite some reunions, OHCHR said.
- The OHCHR reiterated support for the Independent Institution on Missing Persons in the Syrian Arab Republic and urged urgent clarification of missing persons' fates.
- The latest figures add to the more than 100,000 people who went missing under the Assad era, with the Office of the United Nations High Commissioner for Human Rights saying accountability is essential for Syria's future.
