A new study published for months suggests that Europeans are among the most democracies. "The low percentage of sustained support for democracy is really worrying," warns an NGO chief.
According to data collected in seven EU member states, consistent supporters of democratic institutions are in the minority, which favors populists. However, the perception of EU membership and cooperation is overwhelmingly positive, even though more people trust their national governments than Brussels.
A new study published in the month, 28 July, by the European Movement shows a significant decline in European confidence in democracy, particularly in citizens from countries such as France, Romania and Spain.
Europeans are increasingly disillusioned with democracy, according to a survey by the European Movement, a campaign group that advocates for closer integration and stronger institutions across the Union. Only 36% of those surveyed are consistent supporters of democracy, appreciating the right to vote and recognizing the importance of checks and balances between powers.
