Europe must 'ramp up' pressure on Russia, says No 10 after Coalition of the Willing meeting with Volodymyr Zelenskyy
European leaders unanimously agreed to strengthen sanctions that are weakening Russia's economy and back Ukraine's resistance amid ongoing peace talks and territorial disputes.
- Following talks in London, Zelenskyy left for Brussels to meet EU chief Ursula von der Leyen and Nato chief Mark Rutte, after holding discussions with leaders at Downing Street.
- At the heart of the talks was a US-proposed peace plan viewed as favourable to Russia, with contentious territorial terms over Donbas and stalled use of immobilised Russian assets due to Belgium's refusal.
- The four European leaders emerged from Downing Street at around 2.20 for a photo but declined questions, while Friedrich Merz expressed scepticism about US documents and Zelenskyy called the talks productive with small progress towards peace.
- With the frozen-assets question unresolved, President Zelenskyy is pressing back with European support and urging negotiators to find a middle ground, while von der Leyen said Russia’s asset denial will last as long as its war continues.
- After three days of talks with US diplomats, the London meeting focused on overcoming issues in the US-proposed peace plan and could shape collective security and Ukraine's war strategy.
