EU scientists sound alarm over escalating spring drought

According to scientists, 2025 could be a year of drought for Germany and Europe. Researchers from the EU Joint Research Centre (JRC) warn of continued drought in the coming months. A recent report says that large parts of Europe are affected.

After March, April was also a very dry month. As a result, the level of half of all Flemish groundwater basins is now already low to very low. Yet that groundwater is important for nature, farmers, industry and citizens. Although we are not yet in the danger zone, the Flemish Environment Agency warns that we should be frugal with water.

Even though nature looks fresh and green, the ground is bone dry. Drought experts from Wageningen University warn: "It is one of the driest springs ever."
