The new digital border system of the European Union, the Entry/Exit System (ESS), came into operation on Sunday, 12 October. Since that date, EU countries will begin to electronically record the data of those entering the EU for short stays (90 days in a 180-day period). It applies to non-EU travellers entering or leaving the EU. The new digital border system replaces the current practice of manually sealing passports.
