Migrant Sex Offender Released Due to Human Error, Lammy Tells MPs
Hadush Kebatu was mistakenly released from HMP Chelmsford one month after a 12-month sentence for sexual assault and was quickly arrested in London, authorities said.
- On Sunday, October 26, 2025, the Metropolitan Police arrested Hadush Kebatu in Finsbury Park at around 8.30am after he was mistakenly released from HMP Chelmsford on Friday.
- Hadush Gerberslasie Kebatu, an Ethiopian national, had been jailed for 12 months in September after sexually assaulting a 14-year-old girl following offences on July 7, eight days after arriving on June 29.
- Information from the public led officers to Finsbury Park, while CCTV placed Kebatu in Dalston and Dalston Library carrying a white bag, and witness Sim said he asked, `Where am I going? What am I doing?` after release.
- He was detained by police and will be returned to custody; Justice Secretary David Lammy ordered strengthened release checks and a full investigation, while a prison officer was taken off duties.
- Amid wider system concerns, a report found 262 mistaken releases in a year, and Charlie Taylor, chief inspector of prisons, warned, `I think what's making it easier to make mistakes are the changes that keep happening to the way in which early release happens`.
