England Cricket Legend Flintoff Named Sydney Thunder Head Coach
On Tuesday, Sydney Thunder confirmed former England allrounder Andrew Flintoff will serve as head coach on a two-year deal, replacing Trevor Bayliss in what the club described as "the most significant off-field acquisition in club history."
Management pursued the change after a 2025/26 Big Bash League campaign where Thunder finished last, managing just two wins in 10 matches and failing to reach the knockout stages.
Known as 'Freddie,' the England legend brings 272 international caps across all formats and recent coaching experience with the England Lions and Northern Superchargers in The Hundred, finishing fourth and third respectively in 2024 and 2025.
General manager Trent Copeland called the appointment "a huge day in the history of Sydney Thunder," as Flintoff inherits a talented squad featuring former Australia opener David Warner, Sam Konstas, and English wicketkeeper Sam Billings.
Emphasizing that success is 'underpinned by hard work,' Flintoff aims to establish a culture where players view the Thunder as "the best part of the year," while continuing to lead the England Lions simultaneously.
